Magento

Magento is an open sourced e-commerce web application based on PHP, but also offers a Magento Enterprise Edition which is a paid version supported by SLA’s and is designed for larger enterprise customers.  Varien developed Magento after previously specialising in osCommerce which unlike Joomla and Mambo, Magento was rewritten as its own platform and not a variant of osCommerce.

Magento like many PHP platforms support the installation of modules through the web admin area and are installed by entering a module key into the Magento web interface.  The three categories of modules hosted on Magento Connect is:

  1. Commercial Modules
  2. Community Modules
  3. Core Modules

Some of advantages of using Magento for an ecommerce store is its versatility and freedom offered to web developers to customise its skin and its integration with web analytics platforms such as Google Analytics.
